Don't Rush

Don't Rush

Daily, a trainee will be communicating with clients, compiling various documents, and assisting in wider firm projects. If ‘ur spellin and grammer isn’t perrfect on ur applocation’, we will assume it wouldn’t be for the above roles, and I’m afraid that will be a no from us.

We Love law, but it’s not everything

What else do you do and are interested in? We want to see you lead a balanced and interesting life outside work, this makes for a more well-rounded, happier and integrated trainee which is highly important to us and the service we offer. Also, don’t forget work experience outside of law, skills from most jobs or work experience can be transferrable to the legal profession. Think about what you have done and tell us how that relates, have you worked with clients in a retail environment or worked in an office in a different role?

We take our work very seriously, and offer the very best service to our clients. But to do that we need a happy, integrated team and this is built through the personalities of our staff. We need to see your personality and whether it will fit in with our team, it’s tricky to show personality through written applications but when asked a lighter question, don’t hide humour.

Be the one to stand out in the crowd

Be the one to stand out in the crowd

We see hundreds of applications from students with high grades from top universities, each with an active membership in the law society and several legal work placements. These are virtually a given for any candidate seeking a training contract. We want to know what makes you interesting – can you speak Taushiro**? Are you a world champion quidditch player? Have you headlined at Glastonbury*?

*Bit extreme we know, but you get our point.

**The world’s fourth least spoken language, spoken by 100 people originating in Peru. But you knew that anyway, didn’t you?

An interested person is an interesting person

Why do you want to practice law? The level of service we provide to our clients is driven by passion, and we look for this passion in every single one of our employees. Show us your passion for law and the route of it, why law? Why Geldards?

Us, us, us, me, me, me

Us, us, us, me, me, me

We know this probably won’t be the only application you are writing, but please don’t make that too obvious. For example, top tip – don’t leave other law firms’ names on it. We want to see you have researched us and understand our culture and ethos, tell us how you match this and what you will bring to the wider team.

Don’t just use them for the sake of it. We guarantee every application we receive says “commercial awareness”, and some probably don’t even know what it means. Tell us how, when and where this was gained, use examples and provide us with evidence.

Be what you want to be, not what others want to see

Be what you want to be, not what others want to see

Please don’t lie or ‘bend the truth’, we will refer to your application forms during assessment centres and interviews and being caught out makes it pretty uncomfortable for all involved. You don’t need to pretend to be something you are not, be proud of who you are, what you have achieved and what you are interested in, this confidence will shine through in your application without the need to lie.
